Marita Baker was born in the bush near Fregon community 1968. Her father, highly regarded artist, Jimmy Baker (deceased) had moved to Fregon with his family. Marita’s mother’s country is a sacred place to the south of Watarru. Marita worked for many years at Kaltjiti Arts in Fregon where she was a much valued director, artist and chairperson. Marita has recently moved to Kanpi, the place of the Kalaya Tjukurpa (Emu Dreaming) and her ancestral home. Marita paints both the Emu Dreaming but also the story of the spiritual woman, Malilu who took refuge in cave. This cave is visited by the women of Kanpi and song and ceremony is conducted in the location of the cave.
