Thomas Tjapaltjarri was born c. 1964 in the Gibson Desert, Western Australia. In 1984 he was one of a group of nine that made national headlines. Dubbed “The Last Nomads” by the media, the group caused a sensation when they “walked out of the desert” and made contact with the Western world for the first time. Thomas paints Tingari depicting the travels of the creation ancestors of the same name. The Pintupi believe the Tingari ancestors created the country around them and importantly the law which the Pintupi still live by. Not a lot of information is known about the Tingair Ancestors as it is so sacred, it is kept secret.
