REGION: ATNELTYE (BOUNDARY BORE), UTOPIA, N.T.
Roseanne Morton was born in 1984 at Atneltye (Boundary Bore) in the expansive Indigenous homelands region of Utopia, some 240km north-east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Roseanne is the daughter of artist Gracie Morton (deceased). Her great-aunties are Gloria, Kathleen, Myrtle, Violet and Ada Bird Petyarre, all of whom are widely celebrated artists in their own right.
Roseanne learned to paint from her renowned mother Gracie, and continues to paint the same Dreaming stories, namely Anwekety (Bush Plum) Dreaming, of which Gracie was a custodian. In this painting, the finely layered dots represent the low hanging fruits in various stages of ripeness and create an impressive three-dimensional visual effect. The diagonal lines that dissect the canvas are the tracks walked by the women walk to collect the plum. The women meet in the middle, defined by the concentric circle, to eat these nutritious fruits and honour the spirit of the plant. There are also many songs and ceremonies that relate to the bush plum.
