Bronwyn Marshall Nangala b. 1974

Bronwyn Marshall Nangala was born in Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in 1974, and grew up in the community of Papunya in the remote Northern Territory. Papunya is a place of great cultural and artistic significance and is widely considered the birthplace of the Western Desert contemporary art movement. Bronwyn is sister to acclaimed artist, Esther Bruno Nangala.

Bronwyn paints Tjala Tjukurpa - Honey Ant Dreaming. Bronwyn says this is a 'travelling story', which started further west, and ended at Papunya, the 'resting place' of this Dreaming. The three hills at Papunya form an important site, together representing the form of an ancestral Honey Ant. This is Bronwyn's grandfather's country. Using a dotting technique that is characteristic of the Western Desert painting movement, Bronwyn creates symbols to depict the journey of women to collect the honey ants. The u-shapes around the central roundels represents the minyma (women) who are digging for the prized tucker, with their piti (coolamons) and wana (digging sticks) beside them. The honey ants dig tunnels deep into the ground in arid woodland country, creating branching chambers in the roots of the mulga trees. Aboriginal people know to look for the ants coming from small holes in the earth, and they know how to follow the tunnels to reveal the larger nests full of the ants and their larvae.

The Tjala Tjukurrpa that Bronwyn inherits through her grandfather is not just any Dreaming at Papunya - it is the story at the very origin of the Western Desert painting movement. When the men of Papunya first put their designs into permanent paint in 1971, the image chosen by the senior custodians for the famous mural on the Papunya school wall was the Honey Ant Dreaming, painted over several weeks by Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri, Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra and other senior men. The explosion of painting that followed led, within a year, to the founding of the artists' cooperative - and the name they chose, Papunya Tula, is itself the name of honey ant hills near the settlement, meaning "a meeting place for all brothers and cousins", a Honey Ant Dreaming site shared by groups from across the Western Desert. The mural was lost in 1974 when the school was repainted, but the Dreaming it depicted has never stopped being painted, and Bronwyn's canvases continue that story at its resting place.

Bronwyn now paints for Papunya Tula Artists, the Aboriginal-owned cooperative those first painters established in 1972, and in December 2023 her work was shown in Papunya Tula Artists: Community XIV at Utopia Art Sydney - the company's annual Sydney survey introducing its newest generation of painters. Her sister Esther, a granddaughter of the celebrated Pintupi artist Naata Nungurrayi and known for her paintings of the women's site of Marrapinti, appeared in the following year's Community XV, placing both sisters among the current generation of artists carrying the Papunya Tula story forward more than fifty years after the mural was painted.

Bronwyn has been around artists and family members painting for many years, however she only began painting 2-3 years ago. She says painting makes her very happy and she wasn't expecting it to make her so happy. Bronwyn enjoys painting in vibrant, warm tones, using lines of dotting that successfully achieve an op-art aesthetic, creating movement and depth on her canvases.
