The Utopia region of the Northern Territory encompasses a vast expanse of desert terrain that is the traditional homelands for several Aboriginal language groups. Utopia has forged a significant artistic legacy and greatly influenced the growing Aboriginal art movement from the late 1970s, particularly with the emergence of some of the most widely recognised Aboriginal artists, such as Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Polly Ngale and Gloria Petyarre, among many others. Many popular painting techniques and stories relating to 'Women's Business', such as the collection of bush foods and medicine, and aspects of ceremony such as body paint designs (Awelye), originated from the Utopia region.
