Cindy Morton 1976-2021
LANGUAGE: ALYAWARRE
REGION: UTOPIA, N.T.
Cindy Morton Petyarre (deceased) was an Alyawarre artist from Utopia, an Indigenous homelands region some 240km north-east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Utopia is a region with a great cultural and artistic legacy, a place from which many globally acclaimed artists emerged, such as Cindy's own great-aunt, Gloria Petyarre (dec.) Cindy's mother is also the well-known artist, Gracie Morton (dec.). Cindy developed her artistic practice alongside her mother and other family members.
Cindy created her own unique style using a myriad of fine, layered dots to depict the Bush Plum Dreaming – an important Dreaming in her country. The anwekety, Bush Plum, is a beloved and nutritious tucker that is highly prized among Aboriginal people of the Central desert.
Cindy's paintings have great depth, movement and texture. The fine dots capture the bush plum in various stages of ripeness, and the white lines that lie on top are indicative of the cracked desert earth upon which they grow.
