Patricia Kamara's Pencil Yam paintings are a vibrant representation of the yams ripening in the earth before they are cooked and eaten. The white dots between the pencil yams are indicative of the tiny seeds that can be thrown into the wind and reharvested, or ground down and turned into flour. In addition to being an important food source, the yam is celebrated in song and ceremony by the women as it holds a significant spirituality.
