In this painting, rising star artist Clarise Tunkin depicts aspects of Minyma Malilu, a significant story about a spiritual ancestor woman. The sacred site of Malilu's cave is situated just outside Clarise's home of Kanpi, a small community in the APY Lands. Clarise fondly remembers visiting Malilu's cave with her mother, esteemed artist Teresa Baker, at age fifteen. Clarise was raised by strong women who taught her about her Country and the sacred stories associated with it. Song and ceremony are still performed where Malilu’s cave is situated; women sing love songs to their husbands and seek out the healing powers of Malilu’s spirit that reverberates through the sprawling tunnels of the cave system.
