Delvine Pitjara skilfully depicts the topography of her country in the Utopia region of the Northern Territory. Abundant to this area is the bush yam or pencil yam, and is home to the Yam Spirit Dreaming story. Delvine often paints the roots of the yam using fine white lines on a black canvas, the lengths of which creating undulating movement and depth. Delvine paints in a monochromatic or reduced palette, giving a striking, contemporary aesthetic to her paintings that are drawn from deep and intimate knowledge of her country and its important geographic features such as sandhills, creek beds and waterholes.
