Raelene Williams
Language: Arrente
Region: Utopia, NT
Raelene lives and works in Alice Springs, Northern Territory. Raelene paints several stories including the Whirly Winds and Bush Damper Seed. Created by converging hot and cold wind currents, the whirly winds move quickly across the land. They carry and distribute small bush seeds as they travel. These seeds find new ground and momentarily come into bloom after deserts rains.
The bush damper seeds grow around waterholes on the tips of desert grasses. They are collected by the women and ground into a four using a grinding stone. The flour is then mixed with water and put on hot coals to make damper (a type of bread). Raelene’s sister, Maureen Williams is also a renowned artist living and working in Coober Pedy, South Australia.
