Meredith Curley b. 1980

Biography

Language: Pitjantjatjara

Region: Pukatja, APY LANDS, S.A.

Meredith Curley is an artist from the small community of Pukatja, formerly Ernabella, in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands. Meredith is the daughter of acclaimed artist, Imitjala Curley and the sister of artists, Madeline Curley and Maria Curley.

Meredith paints a major Dreaming story from her ancestral country - the Ngintaka story. This is a significant songline about a lizard-man who stole a grinding stone and was subsequently pursued all across country before meeting his fate. Meredith depicts a part of the story where the Ngintaka and his wife, the Echidna, were on their honeymoon in a cave. They ate a sweet treat - a sweet, starchy chrysalis that is found on eucalyptus leaves. Like her sister Madeline, Meredith also paints aspects of the famous Seven Sisters Dreaming story, as the songline passes through the APY Lands, detailing the journey of the seven sisters as they are pursued across country by the "bad man", Wati Nyiru, in his efforts to make one of the sisters his wife.

Meredith is a talented and dynamic artist who paints with fantastic depth and movement; her delicate swirling patterns and bright, vibrant colour choices successfully fuse the traditional dotting technique with a contemporary aesthetic.
