Sacha Long b. 1990

Biography
LANGUAGE: ALYAWARRE
REGION: UTOPIA, N.T.

Sacha Long is from Utopia, an expansive Indigenous homelands region of the Northern Territory of great cultural and artistic significance. Sacha is the daughter of artist Marcia Turner Petyarre, who spent her formative years of painting alognside the likes of Minnie Pwerle, Kathleen Petyarre and Gloria Petyarre, who first popularised the Bush Medicine Leaf style that Sacha predominantly paints.

There are a variety of medicinal flowers, plants and leaves that are found in Central Australia, as well as a variety of ways that medicine can be prepared. Bush medicine is a deeply significant and spiritual aspect to Indigenous cultures. In Sacha's paintings, she depicts the medicinal leaves that are sourced and collected by the women, and placed in the sun to dry. They are then ground down into a fine powder and mixed with animal fats to extract the medicinal qualities. Sacha’s paintings contain vivid and contrasting colours to create depth and rhythm across the canvas.  Sacha is an emerging artist and her career holds great promise.
