In this painting, Raelene depicts whirly winds, a unique occurrence in Central Australia.
Whirly winds are swirling gusts of rapidly rotating air, collecting all manner
of leaves, sand and debris in its path, as well as bush seeds that are
dispersed across the country. These seeds find new ground and come into ephemeral
bloom after desert rains. Whirly winds represent spirits for some Aboriginal
people.
“The three wirly winds sweeping across the
countryside making way for new plants and fauna to grow.”
– Raelene Williams
