Reanelle Jurra b. 1987

Biography
LANGUAGE: WARLPIRI
REGION: WILLOWRA, N.T.

Reanelle Jurra comes from the remote community of Willowra, some 340km north-west of Mparntwe (Alice Springs) in the Northern Territory. Her aunty is esteemed artist Eva Napaltjarri Nelson, and she is also related to well-known Aboriginal artist Dadu Nungarrayi Gorey.

Reanelle paints significant Dreaming stories from the Warlpiri language group, including Bush Damper Seed Dreaming and Waterhole Dreaming. Reanelle represents the underground water sources with central roundels, around which the cherished seeds of native bush damper can be found and collected, as well as other tucker or bush medicine botanicals. The damper seeds are depicted by the delicate white dotting. The women harvest the damper seed and grind it up to make flour for bush damper, a bread-like tucker.

Like her aunty Eva Nelson, Reanelle paints in a monochromatic or reduced palette, creating striking, high contrast works using a fine dotting technique.
