LANGUAGE: PITJANTJATJARA
REGION: Amata, Apy lands, S.a.
Amelia Riley is an emerging artist from the small community of Amata, located in the remote Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. Amelia’s mother is the highly regarded artist, Alison Munti Riley, and her sister Anthea Riley is also a talented emerging artist. With the guidance of her mother, Amelia is developing her own individual style, as she continues learning the stories of her community and culture.
Amelia’s painting style has a youthful and carefree energy, and just like her mother, works well in bright, bold colour palettes. Amelia often paints Ngintaka (lizards or perentie) – there is a significant Ngintaka songline that intersects her country, and they also provide an important food and medicinal source. There is also a significant ngintaka songline that passes through Amelia’s country. She also paints Bush Tomatoes, a beloved tucker, and aspects of the significant Kungkakarrangkalpa Tjukurrpa (Seven Sisters Dreaming). In her spare time, Amelia likes to play softball.
