Sandra Teece

Sandra Teece is an emerging artist from Ampilatwatja, a small community some 300km north-east of Mparntwe (Alice Springs). Sandra has watched many generations of her family paint, and her artistic practice is greatly encouraged by her father Murphy Teece, who is also a painter. Her father also taught her about bush medicine and how to make it.

The healing properties of particular native plants are highly prized by Aboriginal people of the desert. These leaves and flowers and are traditionally collected by women, who can make a variety of medicines - a common method is grinding the botanicals up with animal oils or fats, creating a healing topical paste. Sandra paints the medicinal plants and flowers and where they grow on her country, using a fine dotting technique.
