Sophia Tunkin

Biography
LANGUAGE: PITJANTJATJARA
REGION: Kanpi, s.A.

Sophia Tunkin is a young emerging artist hailing from the esteemed Baker family; she is the daughter of artist Teresa Baker, granddaughter of Kay Baker, and younger sister of Clarise Tunkin. Sophia is a rising star in the Aboriginal art world, and paints the Minma Malilu story, of which the Baker family are custodians. Different aspects of the life of the elderly spiritual woman Malilu are depicted by each custodian - such as her journey across country in pursuit of her daughter who was with the “wrong” man, or the branching cave system where she lived. Malilu’s cave is a deeply spiritual place for Anangu women and is still visited today. Sophia paints in highly contrasting and bold colour palettes with a contemporary aesthetic.
