Born in 1965, Jeannie Mills Pwerle is the daughter of well-known Utopia artist, Dolly Mills and niece of Utopia elder and acclaimed Utopian artist, Greeny Purvis Petyarre. With an innate sense of colour and creativity, Jeannie paints a repetition of line to represent the pencil yam (anaty), while the white dots are indicative of the tiny yam seeds. The yam holds great nutritional value as well as carrying spiritual meaning for the Alyawarre people. Apart from being an essential food source, a lot of song and ceremony was conducted about the pencil yam. Jeannie’s canvases are joyous reflections of the pencil yam and the significance it holds.
